Advertising is a form of announcement or informing. In other words, it is the process of making people aware of the existence of a product or service through text, sound, video, signs, phone calls, meetings, presentations, printed materials in magazines, leaflets, and other means. Advertising is one of the fields of marketing, while marketing itself belongs to the sphere of economic science.
In the Tajik language, advertising is called “Tablighot.” So how does it differ from the word “Targhibot”?
“Tablighot” primarily refers to informing the public about the existence of an event, product, or service, with the ultimate goal of encouraging the purchase of the advertised product. Advertising is mainly carried out by companies and entrepreneurs who use television, the internet, billboards, informational leaflets, and newspapers to present their products and services to the public, emphasizing their advantages and motivating people to make a purchase.

Agitation is a completely different concept. Agitation refers to activities aimed at convincing a particular group of people about a certain issue. For example, explaining to children that if they study well, they will gain good knowledge and become respected and successful people in the future. In other words, agitation is an educational and explanatory activity carried out through various events such as round tables, meetings, gatherings, competitions, and other forms of communication.
The main goal of agitation is to gain people’s trust and encourage them toward certain actions: leading a healthy lifestyle, studying well, not wasting time, following safety rules, choosing a particular leader during elections, and so on. Agitation is mainly conducted by governmental, public, religious, and supervisory institutions, particularly by directors, imams, police officers, teachers, doctors, and other representatives of society.
Now you probably understand that “advertising” is a concept connected with commerce and business, whereas “agitation” mainly belongs to the social sphere and is generally non-commercial in nature.
The history of advertising dates back to Ancient Greece, and the word itself means “to loudly announce” or “to proclaim.” Even today, similar examples can be seen in the markets of Tajikistan, where sellers advertise their products using tape recorders or other sound equipment. Sometimes traders themselves call out to people with phrases such as: “Come here, beautiful shirts for sale!” or “Come here, sister!” and so on.
Advertising can be divided into the following types (according to распространённость / popularity):
1. Modern Internet Advertising:
- Contextual advertising — distribution of advertisements through Google or Yandex across various international websites, including mobile applications.
- Targeted advertising — advertising on social networks such as Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, Facebook, and others. This is paid advertising, and even with 5–10 dollars it is possible to reach thousands of targeted people based on age, geography, gender, and interests.
- Display advertising — placement of images or video clips on websites and applications.
- Native advertising — advertising placed alongside thematically related products or services. For example, advertisements for plumbing or home appliance repair services inside residential building entrances.
- Influencer advertising — promotion through bloggers, singers, and famous personalities. Interesting advertising videos, including humorous ones, can be posted on their social media pages.
2. Traditional Advertising:
- Outdoor advertising: billboards, brackets, signboards, citylights, LED screens.
- Indoor advertising: LCD monitors inside shopping and service centers, banners, wall signs, advertisements in elevators, and so on.
- Print advertising: newspapers, magazines, leaflets, brochures, and others.
- Television and radio advertising.
3. Direct Advertising:
- Telephone calls.
- Promotion at concerts and various events.
- Organization of exhibitions.
- Email marketing campaigns.
- Promotion through messengers.
- One-on-one personal meetings.
Each type of advertising has its own characteristics depending on the product or service, which is why the results may differ. In addition, when conducting advertising campaigns, it is important to consider seasonality, geography, pricing, quality, and other factors.
For effective promotion, it is advisable to consult a professional and experienced specialist. In advertising, it is essential to emphasize the advantages of the product in order to create interest and desire among customers to purchase it.
It should also be noted that advertising is regulated by the government, and not all products are allowed to be advertised. For example, advertising cigarettes, alcoholic beverages, and other harmful products is prohibited. It is also forbidden to use false or misleading claims.
There is a special law on advertising, and violations may result in large fines and even criminal liability.
